NCAA Women's Basketball All-Americans

I do not know if this has ever happened before, but UConn is so much better than everyone else in women's basketball that they deserve three 1st Team All-Americans. How do you choose only 1 or 2 from among Rene Montgomery, Maya Moore and Tina Charles? Montgomery is the consummate team leader and point guard; Moore is the most talented player in the country; and Charles is arguably the best all-around post player in the country. Who do you ignore?

In my eyes, there are at most seven players in the running for 1st Team All-American:
Montgomery, Moore and Charles
Kristi Tolliver, Maryland
Angel McCoughtry, Louisville
Courtney Paris, Oklahoma
DeWanna Bonner, Auburn

Picking which two to put on the 2nd Team is difficult.

1st Team
Rene Montgomery
Maya Moore
Kristi Tolliver
Tina Charles
DeWanna Bonner

POY Rene Montgomery

As much as I like Paris, in the games that I watched, I thought Charles looked like the better player, despite Paris' incredible double-double streak. The tougher choice, actually, was among Bonner, Tolliver and McCoughtry. Leaving McCoughtry off the 1st Team is incredibly difficult, as she's an exceptional player. However, I thought four Big East players was probably pushing it, and as much as I like McCoughtry, she's not better or more deserving than Moore or Montgomery.

I imagine the "real" All-American list will be more diplomatic and likely feature Paris, McCoughtry/Moore, Bonner, Tolliver and Montgomery with Charles as a 2nd Teamer.

Nice to show the women a little love. A relative of mine plays women's basketball in the Big East so I tune in to the girl's game quite a lot.

I think Renee Montgomery deserves the most credit for UCONN's success. Montgomery has been the catalyst for this team's success. UCONN's leads have been threatened in very few games, but when they were, Montgomery was always the girl to step up and hit the big shot.

Having said that, Angel Mccoughtry absolutely belongs on the First Team. In addition to her impressive offensive stats she is averaging almost 5 steals/game, 2 more than any other player in Div. 1. Most importantly, you take McCoughtry off of Louisville and they are an average, non-top 25 team. McCoughtry transformed the Louisville program and put them on the Women's college basketball map.

At some point, you have to contribute UCONN's success to the COLLECTIVE effort of the team and the best coaching staff in women's basketball instead of the INDIVIDUAL play of "The Big 3". Although all 3 are valuable to the team, the team's success is not primarily resting on ONE individual.

I definitely understand your point of view, I'm just passionate and one of the few that enjoy women's basketball. It would be interesting to see someone else's thoughts.

Okay, so you'd add McCoughtry. Who would you take off the 1st team? I agree that if I did not look at conference affiliation and simply looked at the top/most important 5 players, McCoughtry is probably #3 on my list behind Montgomery/Moore and just ahead of Tolliver/Charles.

To be fair, I have only seen Bonner play for a couple minutes this season, and obviously I have not seen everyone play.

It's hard for me not to have Paris on the 1st Team as I coached her at a camp and she's a great kid.

Last week was a bad week, too, as I worked with Cal's Alexis Gray-Lawson when she was a junior and Baylor's Danielle Wilson before she left for Baylor, as she trains with Jerry Powell in Long Island, one of my friends.

I would take Tolliver off the first team. If there's three potential All-American's at UCONN, why can't there be 4 from the Big East?

It's an interesting argument. It will become a little more clear when they announce Big East POY.

I was pretty close to guessing espn's all-american team:

Tolliver on the 2nd Team was the only miss.

I think I would take off Bonner and add McCoughtry to Tolliver and the 3 UConn players in retrospect. She should not be punished for conference affiliation.

Also, I would have at least considered Christina Wirth for the 2nd Team. She does everything for Vanderbilt, the SEC Tournament champions.
