Toronto Hires Gordon Herbert as Assistant Coach

In September 2006, many journalists wrote about the eventual hiring of a European coach to coach an NBA team. Many assumed the coach would be Serbian. The knowledgeable writers suggested someone like Ettore Messina, Head Coach of CSKA Moscow and an advisor to Cleveland's Mike Brown (they left the NBA summer league together last night).

I suggested David Blatt or Gordon Herbert. Now, Herbert is an assistant coach with the Toronto Raptors, which would put him as the leader in the clubhouse, as few people believe an organization will, or should, hire a coach straight from Europe without any NBA experience. However, if Messina continues to advise Brown, maybe his experience with the Cavs will be enough for an owner or General Manager to overlook his lack of NBA experience and hire the most proven club coaches outside the United States.
