It's not secret that the San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons maintain their elite status because of their consistency, talent, hard work, effort and, of course, leadership from their management.
I have been busy, so I never mentioned the Nazr Mohammed for Primoc Brezec and Walter Hermann trade. Ironically, Nazr was featured in another trade which I applauded: the Spurs giving Malik Rose's bad contract to the Knicks (who else?) for Nazr. Now, Nazr has the bad contract that Detroit has done well to trade. Ironic.
I don't know what the Bobcats are thinking. If you gave me the choice of any of the three players, Nazr would probably be my third choice. He's a nice role player. However, Hermann can shoot and brings energy and Brezec is a poor man's Zydrunas Ilgaukas. (sorry about the spelling. I'm in a hurry with no time to look up names).
And, the Pistons save money. If I wan an NBA GM, and Joe Dumars or R.C. Buford proposed a trade or even agreed to a trade I proposed, I would think again. They make too many good moves which help maintain their organizations elite status.
If Hermann develops a little more Nocioni in his game, watch out. Joe Dumars is a lock for Executive of the Year when you combine this trade with the Jarvis Hayes signing. Every year, just when people think the Pistons are going to slip, Dumars keeps them at the top.

you must not have watched Brezec at all the last 2 seasons. the guy cant rebound, defend or hit the open jumper anymore.
You forgot to factor in the cost of Herrmann's hair upkeep, which pretty much evens it out. Watching that feathered majesty in HD almost made my eyes bleed during the Pistons/Celtic time outs last night.
Sounds like you were in too much of a hurry to do a thorough analysis as well. I agree with jonathan. Brezec has been given a chance the last couple of seasons after initially showing promise. All he can do is shoot the mid-range jumper. He can't defend, and even when he was playing at his best with good minutes he never averaged more than 5.5 rebounds a game. He also can't catch a pass to save his life. That is not starting center material. And it won't get you a back-up job on a team like the Pistons.
That being said, Hermann is a nice piece. I would say Dumars got the better of this deal, but most people don't follow the Bobcats and don't realize how badly they need a big, so it wasn't exactly a coup. Nazr could still pan out nicely for them; he did a great job the other night with 17pts and 8 rbds on > 50% FG.
this move is a genius salary dump. no more no less.
Amazingly, I have seen the Slovenian National Team play more than I have the Bobcats, as the Bobcats are never on TV (see post below). For Slovenia, Brezec looked good. I know he has struggled this year, and I never said he was the answer for Detroit (or Charlotte) but he is skilled. Hermann is an energy guy who can make shots. Nazr is not a skilled big and he is way overpaid.
On salaries alone, it's a huge win for Detroit. I think Hermann is the best player in the deal, so it's another win for Detroit. I understand Charlotte's need for another big, but the best thing they did was open a roster spot with a 2 for 1 deal. I wouldn't want Nazr's deal for the next several years, though if it was a one year deal, then I would agree that while Detroit got the best of it, Charlotte did well too.
Why don't they give Rod Benson a shot? He's dominating the NBDL? Jelani McCoy just got cut?
I agree with your analysis on Herrmann, and more-or-less on Mohammed. However, you're off the mark on Brezec.
I'm surprised the trade went through, because something is clearly up with this guy this season, and who knows if he's coming back from it. I'm not sure if it's physical or mental, but he has no "zip" in his game. He never was an athlete, but it used to be clear that he was trying out there.
Well, if he's off the mark, the Pistons cut him and his reasonable salary and sign Webber and stay under the luxury tax because of the deal. Another win. And, maybe Brezec clicks with Saunders where he did not click with Vincent. He sounds worn down in the interviews and speculation I have read. So, even if he is having an off year, his contract is up and he's not a bad guy to have as your 15th man.
And, if he happens to get it together, he's a 7-footer who can make mid-range jumpers, which works well, since the Pistons like to set a lot of screens to get Hamilton curling and use the picker to pop for J's or cut to the hoop for lay-ups.
So, if he sucks, it's a good deal salary wise. If somehow Saunders brings out the best in him, it's a huge win.
This is great insight from a guy who clearly does not let nationality dictate what he thinks of players.
Brezec is big and from eastern europe so he's similar to Big Z. Just forget about the fact that Z hits jumpers out to 18 feet and is so long that he seems to gobble up dozens of offensive rebounds a game.
Walter Herrmann also compared to another player from his own part of the world in Nocioni. One small difference. Nocioni has been good enough to log minutes in a pretty deep (albeit struggling) Bulls rotation when he's been healthy the last 3 seasons. Walter Herrmann however fails to earn minutes on the "surging" Bobcats.
The results of this trade in the big picture are virtually meaningless except for the fact that Nazr Mohammed is competent enough for the Bobcats to slide Okafor to the power forward position and now the Pistons will probably have to find another player to release (and quite possibly pay,Dumars sure saves coin that way) in order to sign budding young superstar Chris Webber.
Joe Dumars built a contender on defense, but this team has passed it's peak. Although they are still capable of making the NBA Finals a good West team will probably beat them.
Signing a benchie and making a meaningless trade does not an executive of the year make.
Executive of the year?
Danny Ainge says hello.
I've never been a huge Danny Ainge fan, but doesn't he have to get Exec of the Year for bringing in KG and Ray Allen via trades? I mean, Jarvis Hayes and Walter Hermann are great n all, and Stuckey and Afflalo should provide some nice backcourt depth for a change, but I'll take KG/Allen any day.
Actually, the most savvy move Ainge made was drafting Bib Baby and signing James Posey. How hard is it to steal KG and Ray Allen/ Those aren't tough calls if your owner is willing to pay all the salaries.
Detroit did not need to make a blockbuster, but Dumars made subtle moves which kept the Pistons at the top of the Eastern Conference. To me, its the subtle moves which are tougher to make and a bigger gamble than going out on a limb to acquire arguably the best player in the league.
Sure, Ainge made the biggest splash, but I guess I see awards differently. I disagreed with Boris Diaw's Most Improved Player award for a similar reason: he switched team and went to a team that used his skills - does that mean he improved?
As for nationalities, I said that Hermann needed more Nocioni to his game. And, besides being Argentine, they are similar: both are energy guys, tweener forwards and decent three-point shooters. Nocioni is far better, which is why I said Hermann needs to add more Nocioni to his game to produce.
As for Brezec, would Yao Ming be a better comparison? I mean, Yao is nota great rebounder for his size either. I would not say Z is a great rebounder. When has Z ever "gobbled up dozens of offensive rebounds in a game?" Brezec is a mid-range shooter. I also said, he's a "poor man's" Z, so, in effect, I said he is similar in size and skills, but not nearly as good.
Is moving Okafur to PF a good thing? He's not a great offensive player. He's a defender and a garbage player. He's not a guy you get the ball on the block and isolate and depend on for points. And, Nazr is not a great offensive force.
As for money, the Pistons can cut Brezec, sign Webber for the minimum and still save money than if they kept Nazr and signed another player. Not to mention that Hermann and Brezec, if they don't do anything this year are free agents whose contracts come off the books in June while Nazr is inked for 3 more years, if I recall correctly.
Saving money (long and short term), filling a need and drafting two steals in the draft are reasons why some teams stay on top and others never move past mediocrity.
Nazr is known as Nancy Muhammed in Detroit. Salary too big and he is stealing minutes from Amir Johnson. We Piston fans are hoping C Webbdoes not get signed, Why? how do you say slow and slower C Webb that's how. Stuckey is now back, Afllalo and Maxiell are bringing it and the Pistons now have Hermann too. Less minutes for starters and vicious practices---fresh and DEEP for playoffs. Another Dumars deal.
I agree about Webber. I was just commenting on the speculation. I don't think they need him. Nazr is putting up numbers in Charlotte in 2 games; not sure what that means? Does that mean Charlotte isn't very good at all if a journeyman post can come in and suddenly become a 17ppg scorer? That San Antonio and Detroit are that good that Nazr really did not contribute much? Right now, it looks like good short term deal for the Bobcats and the Pistons, but I still don't see acquiring Nazr as a long term solution or money well spent moving forward.
