Phoenix Suns Bad for the NBA

For the past two years, everyone has hailed the Phoenix Suns as the most entertaining team in the NBA. However, the enthusiasm and excitement overshadows the Suns' business practices which are becoming more and more questionable.

Thus far this summer, Phoenix gave Portland the #24 pick (Rudy Fernandez) so the Blazers would take James Jones. Today, they parted with 2 future First Round picks so Seattle would take Kurt Thomas' contract for one season. Last summer, they gave Portland their first round (Sergio Rodriguez) pick for $3 million.

So, in the past two years, Phoenix has given away 4 draft picks for $6 million in cash and roughly $11 million in contract savings, while also signing Grant Hill, Sean Marks and Marcus Banks to contracts. This is in addition to allowing Joe Johnson to leave via sign-and-trade because he was too expensive.

Imagine if Phoenix kept the two first round picks: Sergio Rodriguez, the back-up PG they don't have as well as the heir apparent to Steve Nash, and Rudy Fernandez, another back-up G they could stash in Europe for another year. Rookies typically have very good value to dollar contracts because it is a fixed contract. Rodriguez would be cheaper, and a better fit, then Banks. Rodriguez would give the Suns an option once Raja Bell proves to be too expensive.

I understand the Suns' motives. But, I don't know how they can look their fans in the eyes and say they are doing everything possible to win a championship when they added Alando Tucker and subtracted Kurt Thomas, James Jones and Fernandez. It's a hard time to be a Suns team, as emotions are mixed between the good (style of play, Nash returning) and bad (apparent money problems). Regardless, the Suns are setting a bad precedent for the NBA.

Welcome to Phoenix, where the Suns are owned by a banker that is trying to make money. Sarver is in the game for the money and will eventually sell off the team, like Tampa Bay did, and then sell the teaqm and fo back to San Diage where he and Steve Kerr belong.

It's easy to spend other people's money. If keeping Thomas as so important to Suns fans, then how about all ticket holders pay an extra $1000 apiece (16,000 fans times $1000 is $16M that was saved) to keep Thomas.

Blame the real culprit. The idiotic salary cap which forces teams to make personnel decisions on money rather than what's best for the team. This happens all the time in the NFL and quite a bit in the NBA.

I think this trade makes sens only in preparation for a major deal for a front court player. Just because the Draft has passed doesn't mean that Garnett and O'Neal are not in play. The $8 million dollar trade exception doesn't make sense otherwise.

Just a hunch on my part.

What would you prefer, a league where the salary cap forces teams to be smart with the contracts they sign, or a league where a couple rich teams buy all the best players through free agency? The phoenix suns are in this position because they have been idiots when it comes to managing their salaries.

don't forget luol deng

man, if i´m Steve Nash, i demand a trade right NOW!!!

he´s got 100times more reason to demand a trade than Kobe...

and if i´m a suns season ticket holder, i return them right now...

Sarver is wasting the last good years of Nash with his stupidity!!!

LUOL DENG!!!

Robert Sarver, SHAME ON YOU!!!

On the bright side, we got a 34 year old Grant Hill. Who needs a bench when ya got crutches?

Anonymous said...

People stop acting like chicken little... Premature to over react.. More moves will take place and additions of Hill and Tucker are not total wastes..

Way too soon to complain unless your a fickle fan.

Chris G said...

Sarver was living in San Diego having nothing to do with the Suns when Deng was drafted. So some of you need to know what you are talking about. Secondly, Sarver is cheap, but the Suns will still be one of the top 2 or 3 teams in the league and have 3 all-stars all while staying under the cap. You want "bad for the NBA?" Look at the Knicks. Not even a playoff team, and 60-something million over the cap. The NBA's inept salary cap rewards owners like James Dolan and Paul Allen who can just throw money around with no regard for it. You want to blame something, blame the stupid collective bargaining agreement. Not businessman like Sarver who feel the need to pay 8 million dollars to a player who his own head coach rarely plays.

All of the Sun's financial problems can be traced to Tim Donaghy, David Stern, Bruce Bowen, and Robert Horry. Those four guys have been the never-ending excuses for the Suns and their fans for months. Why stop now? If you can't blame them for their short-comings on the court, why blame their main office either?

The Suns always have an excuse for their problems. For them to look in the mirror would be too much for them.

Phoenix has made two mistakes:
1. Signing Marcus Banks - they overpaid for the position he would occupy (9th man), and the contract was too long (3 years and it was still a good deal).
2. Giving Boris Diaw $9 mil per, again, overpaying for his position (4th best palyer on the team).

Have a look at My rundown of salary numbers, and what the ideal team looks like, and compare it with the listed salaries, and you can see that pretty much every Sun, from top to bottom, is overpaid.

Marion too much for a one guy, Ditto Nash and Stoudemire, despite both being "good" contracts, being too much to the top three.

And keep Joe Johnson? What team can afford $60 million for four players? What do you pat the other 9 guys, bus fare?

People don't want to face the fact that the price of keeping Nash, Stoudemire, Marion and Barbosa together is sacraficing something. So far, the Suns have managed to ditch stuff and salary, none of which ahs hurt them.

If Alando tucker works out, the future of Tucker, Stoudemire and next year's Atlanta pick looks pretty good base to me, and migth make Phoenix the one team in recent histiory to not rebuild by being aweful for ten years.

Kerr is just doing as his boss asks, cut payroll yet keep 'em competitive. I've been a Suns season ticket holder for 20 years, if you take out 2 years with Marbury all those years were competetive and fun. How long did it take for the Bulls to become relavent again with youth and low salaries? 8 years? No thanks. I'll keep my Suns.

Stop whining about the cap.
Do the Spurs have a cap? Yes. They also have the best overseas scouting system.

If only YOUR team had a cap, then Id understand but all teams play with it.

Ok, except New York where money has no meaning and people will pay thousands to see incompetents lead incomplete players making max money.

Look, we know WHY the Suns are doing it. Their window has about 2-3 years left, they cant wait for a crap shoot.
Besides, the boy genius is now GM of the Year in Toronto, lets not forget.

Great post about who to blame for all that troubles the Suns.

Hersey said...

It's easy to second guess moves when we haven't seen the team play together. Whoever suits up for the Suns, we'll root for them regardless of how much they make or how they came to the team.

The Suns' fight to stay under the cap does put pressure on their star players but those players earned their contracts in the current NBA pay scheme. Sure Marion/Diaw are overpaid and Nash/Barbosa are underpaid. But having those players in addition to Bell, Stoudemire and Hill are guys most teams would love to have as a core. It's on that core group to produce. Their supporting cast may be cheap but the most important thing to me is that they're hungry to win.

Adam said...

I dont agree, if you think about it logically...the Suns arent planning for the future at the moment b/c once Nash retires(3,4, 5 years at the MAX) theyll have to completely rebuild anyways. They want to win right now...James Jones was horrible...Nash made him great, he'll be out of the league in 2 years...Thomas is old, and now they have $8 mil to do as they please for a back-up big(PJ Brown, Webber, even Varajeo...or if they want that backup PG Boykins), Grant Hill was an amazing pick up if his ankles hold together...Nash, Marion, Barbosa, Stoudemire, Hill, Diaw, Bell for D...even Alando will fit in this system. Also, Dj Strawberry is an underrated pickup from UMD...he's a baller. GIVE JALEN ROSE PT!!!...the shirts are coming soon...anyways, good moves for a championship sooner than later and that's what we really want anyway.

Brian said...

Someone mentioned the rebuilding. Rebuilding would be much easier if they had two top Spaniards stashed in the EuroLeague for another season. As late first round picks, they could let them mature for another season a nd then bring them over when they are ready to start and they'd be incredible bargains. That would be a way to rebuild: Rodriguez, Fernandez and Barbosa in the backcourt with Tucker at SF, Stoudemire and a high first round pick in 2008.

I simply think selling picks sets a bad precedent for the league. It's great for the Blazers, who turned around its franchise in two drafts, but it hurts the credibility of the league, in my opinion.

I like the salary cap. I like the soft cap.

Signing Marcus Banks was a terrible move. Signing Boris Diaw was a questionable move. Diaw, Marion and Stoudemire do not fit together. They bought low on Diaw and they could have sold high last summer, when everyone was convinced he was suddenly a star.

Getting rid of Kurt Thomas is not a terrible move. However, who replaces him. Or, do the Suns go through an 82 game season with a 4/5 rotation of Marion, Diaw and Stoudemire? The problem with the deal is getting rid of 2 future first round picks. The 2008 pick is not a huge deal, as they have Atlanta's pick, but 2010 could be a bigger deal.

It's disheartening to like the Suns and then see the series of moves that they have made. And, yes, I never understood giving away the Luol Deng pick; he always struck me as the answer, as a player who could develop into a Shawn Marion-like force for the Suns, enabling the Suns to deal the more expensive Marion to save money for Nash, Stoudemire and a supporting cast. Can you imagine Stoudemire and Deng together for another 10 years?

Justin said...

I think the Suns could've done a much better job of giving up less for contract relief. Why aim for Seattle, who's also a cash strapped team? I'm sure the Knicks would've gladly taken less by way of picks to relieve the Suns of Kurt Thomas.

And why not attempt to delay your assets instead of getting rid of them? Although giving up the #7 (Deng) to my Bulls didn't turn out to give back equal value (#21? Nate Robinson), I like that idea a lot more than giving away picks for cash just because you don't want that rookie's contract to be on your payroll just yet.

Anonymous said...

The Knicks didn't have a big trade exception handy like the Sonics did.
And who is this idiot who thinks the Suns are under the salary cap?

Anonymous said...

One point people forget is that Joe Johnson did not want to be in Phoenix as the #4 star. He wanted to move to a team where he could prevail.

Kooler Than Jesus said...

The one thing people seem to be missing about the Kurt Thomas deal is that the Suns couldn't get passed the Spurs because they can't stop Duncan. So in an effort to deal with this problem, they dealt away the one guy they had who actually did a decent job on Duncan, and was easily they're best defender for him?

They better hope they're making another move for a quality big man because without someone to at least make Duncan work for his points, the Suns will never beat the Spurs as they're currently constructed and with their style of play.

It's updated every hours with NBA headlines from several different sports websites like ESPN, FOX Yahoo, etc. (Take a look: http://www.widget1000.com/)
